Concrete Driveways

A concrete driveway is only as good as the preparation underneath it. Before any concrete is poured, we evaluate the site, establish the proper grade, and prepare a stable base to help reduce settling and premature cracking. We also discuss whether you need a driveway for everyday vehicles, heavy trucks, or trailers, so we can recommend the appropriate thickness and reinforcement for your project.

Broom finish is the most common choice for concrete driveways because it’s durable, slip-resistant, and easy to maintain. We also offer decorative options if you’re looking for a more customized appearance. We provide free, no-obligation estimates so you get an accurate quote and timeline before any work begins. The overall cost of a concrete driveway depends on the size of the project, site preparation, drainage, reinforcement, and customizations you choose.  Call 540-702-8541 or submit a contact form for a free concrete driveway estimate near Stafford.

Concrete Patios

If you need a new concrete patio or want to give an existing patio an upgrade the City Light Construction team is at your service. We can build everything from simple broom-finished concrete patios and walkout basement patios to custom stamped concrete patios with decorative borders, fire pits, bench seating, and other custom features. Every patio is built to compliment your property, your budget, and the way you plan to use your outdoor space.

The first step toward a concrete patio upgrade is a free, no-obligation estimate so we can discuss your project, evaluate your property, and provide an accurate price quote & project timeline. The overall cost of a concrete patio depends on factors like the size of the patio, scope of site preparation, accessibility, drainage, finish, and any custom features you choose.  Call 540-702-8541 or submit a contact form for a free concrete patio estimate near Fredericksburg.

Concrete Slabs

Before any concrete is poured we’ll discuss your project, evaluate the site, and determine the appropriate slab size, thickness, and reinforcement for its intended use. A garage floor has different requirements than a shed or hot tub pad, so we make recommendations based on the demands of your specific project.

We can install concrete slabs for:

  • Garage floors
  • Workshops
  • Shed and outdoor building pads
  • Home additions
  • Equipment and utility pads
  • Generator and HVAC pads
  • RV and boat parking pads
  • Trash can pads
  • Hot tub pads
  • Athletic courts
  • And More

The overall cost of a concrete slab depends on the size of the slab, site conditions, excavation, reinforcement, and concrete thickness. If you’ve got a vision and aren’t sure where to start, call 540-702-8541 or submit a form for a free concrete slab estimate.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is a great way to get the look of natural stone, brick, slate, or wood without the cost and maintenance of those materials. We offer a variety of decorative patterns, textures, colors, and borders to help you create a finished look that complements your home and outdoor living space. Call 540-702-8541 or submit a form for a free stamped concrete estimate near Stafford.

Concrete Retaining Walls

We build high-quality concrete retaining walls up to 3ft tall to help stabilize slopes, control runoff, reduce erosion, and create more usable outdoor space. Call 540-702-8541 or submit a form for a free retaining wall estimate near Stafford.

Concrete Sealing and Waterproofing

Sealing concrete helps protect it from moisture, stains, UV exposure, and normal wear, which can extend the life of driveways, patios, walkways, and other concrete surfaces. If you’re looking to protect new concrete or extend the life of existing concrete, contact us for a free estimate. We’ll recommend the right sealer based on your project and the condition of the concrete. Call 540-702-8541 or submit a form for a free concrete sealing estimate near Stafford.

Choosing the Right Concrete Finish

One of the questions we get asked all the time is “which concrete finish is best?”. The answer depends on where the concrete is going and how it’ll be used. We don’t recommend the same finish for every project because what works well in a garage doesn’t necessarily work well on a driveway or patio.

Broom Finished Concrete

If we’re pouring a driveway, sidewalk, patio, or walkway, we’re usually going to recommend a broom finish. The light texture gives your shoes and tires better grip when the concrete gets wet without making the surface difficult to clean. It’s durable, practical, and it’s the finish most homeowners choose for outdoor concrete.

Common applications include:

  • Driveways
  • Patios
  • Sidewalks
  • Walkways
  • Pool decks
  • Outdoor concrete slabs

Smooth Trowel Finished Concrete

A smooth trowel finish makes more sense indoors where traction isn’t as much of a concern. It’s commonly used for garage floors, workshops, utility rooms, and other interior slabs because it’s easier to sweep, mop, and keep clean. We generally don’t recommend a smooth finish for outdoor walking surfaces since they can become slippery when wet.

Decorative & Stamped Concrete

If you’re looking for something beyond a traditional concrete finish, stamped concrete gives you more design options while keeping the strength of concrete. It can replicate the look of natural stone, brick, slate, or wood and is a popular choice for patios, pool decks, walkways, and outdoor living spaces. We offer a variety of patterns, textures, colors, and borders to help create a finished look that fits your home.

Not sure which finish is right for your project? During your estimate, we’ll explain the differences between broom finish, smooth trowel finish, stamped concrete, and other decorative options so you can make an informed decision.

Our Concrete Process

1. Site Evaluation

Every project starts with an on-site visit. We’ll discuss your project, evaluate the location, take measurements, and identify anything that could affect the installation, such as drainage, slope, or access to the work area.

2. Excavation

If needed, we remove existing concrete, grass, or soil and excavate the area to the proper depth. This creates room for the base material and the new concrete.

3. Base Preparation

A concrete slab is only as good as what’s underneath it. We install and compact a stable base to help support the concrete and reduce settling over time.

4. Forms & Reinforcement

Forms are installed to establish the shape and elevation of the concrete. Depending on the project, we may also install reinforcement to help improve strength and durability.

5. Concrete Pouring

Once everything is prepared, we pour the concrete, making sure it’s evenly distributed and finished to the correct thickness and grade.

6. Finishing

The concrete is finished based on the needs of the project. For most outdoor concrete, we recommend a broom finish for added traction. We also offer decorative and stamped concrete finishes.

7. Curing

Fresh concrete needs time to gain strength. We’ll explain when it’s safe to walk or drive on the new surface and provide any care instructions to help it cure properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally you should wait at least 7 days before driving on new concrete. While concrete is usually safe to walk on after 24 to 48 hours, it continues to gain strength for about 28 days. During your final walk through we’ll let you know exactly when it’s safe to use your new driveway or slab based on your project.

Sometimes, but it usually isn’t the best long-term solution. If the existing concrete is cracked, settling, or failing, those problems can transfer to the new concrete. We’ll inspect the existing surface and recommend whether replacement or an overlay makes the most sense.

A concrete driveway or patio can last 30 years or more. Proper installation is one of the biggest factors in how long your concrete will perform.

Spring, summer, and fall are all good times to pour concrete when weather conditions are favorable. Concrete can also be poured during colder months with the proper precautions. We’ll schedule your project based on weather conditions to help ensure the best possible results.

It depends on the size of the project and your local building requirements. Some concrete projects require a permit, while others do not. If a permit is needed, we’ll let you know during your estimate and help guide you through the process.
